Varlam Shalamov

Varlam Shalamov was a Russian writer, journalist, and poet known for his accounts of life in the Soviet Gulag. Between 1937 and 1951, he was imprisoned in forced-labor camps in the Kolyma region, where he eventually served as a medical assistant. His work draws directly from his experiences as a survivor of the Arctic camp system.
