Mary Renault
Eileen Mary Challans, known by the pen name Mary Renault, was a British writer and nurse. After graduating from St Hugh's College, Oxford, she began her career writing contemporary romances before moving to South Africa in 1948. She is best known for her historical fiction set in ancient Greece, a genre she focused on throughout the 1950s to explore themes of love and identity.
